5 Swimming Pool Safety Tips

One of the most fun and relaxing summertime activities is going to the swimming pool, whether you have one in your backyard or a community pool is close to your home. However, hundreds of people--especially children--are injured or sometimes die in a swimming pool accident.

In order to avoid tragedy, the following are several safety tips to keep in mind when enjoying the water:

  1. Ensure the pool area is clear - Slips, trips, and falls are some of the most common causes of swimming pool injuries. If an adult or child falls and strikes their head on the concrete, he/she could either suffer a concussion or get knocked out. If a person falls into the water after suffering a head injury, he/she could drown. Make sure the pool area is clear of any chairs, toys, or other debris.
  2. Ensure the pool is clean - Improperly treated water can cause anyone to fall ill, which is why it is imperative to keep it clean by using the adequate pool chemicals. These chemicals can prevent bacteria and other pathogens from infecting the water.
  3. Fence off or cover the pool - A fence can prevent small children from wandering into the pool area and falling into the water. While a pool cover can do the same thing, it also keeps the pool cleaner.
  4. Always supervise children - When children are playing in or around the pool, adults must supervise their activities at all times. Even if they know how to swim, it is still possible to suffer an injury and drown. If a child is missing, check the pool first.
  5. Be prepared - You should have the proper rescue equipment--such as a pool safety ring, a rescue tube, a life hook, and a first aid kit--near the pool in case of emergencies. You should also learn CPR. Since local organizations offer certification courses, getting certified is quite simple.
